El Dorado Hills Photographer, time to introduced myself!

Susannah's headshot in new studio

It’s been awhile since I have done a proper introduction! And with so much changing in the last 2 years it sure is time to reintroduce myself!

My name is Susannah and I am the owner of Susannah Gill Photography. I started my business in New York City in 2006 as a wedding photographer. In 2012 my husband Greg and our son Jaxson hopped west to Santa Cruz dreaming of warmer and sunnier days. While we loved the beaches and forest of Santa Cruz we didn’t have that extra million dollars laying around to buy a house!

We have now found “Home Sweet Home” in the delightful town of El Dorado Hills, CA! We love how family-centered this town is and the incredible schools! And we absolutely adore our house and garden. In fact, I love our house and garden so much it’s turning this extrovert into a homebody! It takes a lot these days to get me off of our southern feeling front porch.  Most days you can find me sitting in the rocking chair. Our black lab puppy Makena will be sitting at my feet, I’ll be sipping tea and waving to the neighbors! I have always dreamed of having a front porch and I still can’t believe this one is ours to enjoy! A dream that definitely came true.

Not only has our location changed but my business has gone through some changes as well. Some of you may remember that last year I claimed after 11 years of shooting weddings that I was retiring that part of my business. It was a bold announcement that I was so sure I was 100% behind.  I knew I still loved weddings but my desire to spend the weekends with my family was taking over. With Jaxson now in school, weekend time is so precious.

Can you guess what happened?  I then photographed what was suppose to be THE last wedding of my career and in a nutshell changed my mind.  The last one was Emily & Nathan’s and well I blame those two! The wedding fully reminded me of all that I love about weddings and I decided that I just can’t give them up!  Haha thank you Emily and Nathan! That being said, I will be much more selective with the weddings I do take on in the future.

Since I will be reducing my weddings greatly, I am jumping into the world of BABIES to fill the rest of my calendar!  I started photographing babies when my past brides/grooms had babies and asked me to document this next chapter in their lives. It was such a natural progression that I never really marketed my self as a baby photographer.  That will be changing now.

I am so excited about this new direction and with it comes a studio space! I signed on recently to join the team of photographers sharing The Studios on Sutter. In fact, one of my new studio partners took this awesome headshot of me in the studio!  Thank you to the talented Stephanie Redhair!

I don’t often bet behind the lens and when I do I’m all sorts of awkward and uncomfortable.  In fact, I felt so uncomfortable going into this shoot that I brought with me a few of my security blankets. First, my jean jacket that is over 25 years old! My favorite chair that I “liberated” from art school in the early 90s.  And my favorite boots that are also going on 20 years old now- I have them resoled every few years because I just love them so!

I guess that kind of wraps up my personality. When I love something I cherish it. My family, my pets, my house, my garden, my jean jacket, my chair, my boots. I don’t need the lastest things- I need the people and items in my life that bring me comfort and inspiration. With that, I feel my happiest.

In fact, I’m about to have one of those birthdays that is a number that makes people reflect on their life.  I have been reflecting all week and I can honestly say I’ve never been happier. I feel so blessed and full of gratitude. I feel that all we have worked so hard for was all meant to bring us to this town, this house and this stage of our lives. It’s the most incredible feeling to know deep in my soul that the hard decisions and risks of the last few years to move and make changes all worked out.

If you are ever up this way, you are welcome to come over and spend some time on the porch with me sipping tea!

Looking forward to putting roots down in El Dorado Hills and documenting the lives of those in this town and surrounding areas of the Bay and Tahoe!
