People ask me all the time what I miss about NYC. Weather is not one of them but photo walks are, perhaps the thing I miss the most. Photo walks consisted of just what it sounds like, walking the streets with my camera in my hand with the intent to do what is called Street Photography. People, shadows, reflections, light, textures, signs, graphics would all display themselves to me and my camera. When photographing people there was always the element of wondering how they might react if they saw you photographing them. By photographing with my camera low and not at my eye level many did not notice at all. Some did and smiled and a few had very angry opinions of this- often told to me very loudly. All of this made me love street photography even more. Although I have done photo walks in other places than NYC, nothing compares to NYC for this form of photography. (Of the places I have traveled to) Now here in California I drive almost everywhere, all those elements I used to photograph zooming past me too fast to admire and document. Or if I am on foot one of my hands is usually holding Jax’s or both eyes are on him watching for his safety.
Most times Street photography feels like an art I used to do. One I miss so greatly. But perhaps one I can return to one day with more consistency somehow. Til then, enjoy this of my photograph from one of those photo walks. This was taken on 34th street between 7th and 8th.
