The Happiest of Halloweens!

FILED IN: Personal

This year Halloween was extra special treat for our family.

Our son Jax who is 6 years old took awhile to warm up to the idea of Halloween and Trick or Treating. He loved the pumpkins and the fact that we had a bowl of candy to give out. But he hated costumes and the idea of going door to door, even if it meant being given candy.

I have loved Halloween since I can remember and I dreamed of one day having a little toddler to take Trick or Treating.  I love how sweet they all look in their costumes and trying to say the words “trick or treat” with wide eyes and smiles! It was hard to not have that kind of fun with Jax when he was young.  Funny how that works out, children have their own ideas, agendas and timelines.  Parenthood has been such a great series of lessons in patience, being open to new ideas or good old plan B!

Every year we stayed home and Jax watched us pass out candy to other children with great curiosity but he never wanted to venture out. Finally when Jax was 4 he agreed to wearing black clothes and carrying one of his Star Wars light sabers to a friend’s party. A start! We went trick or treating when it was still light out to a few houses. Baby steps.

At 5 years old the magic of Halloween began to take root in Jax. He asked to be a blue Ninja and when the costume arrived in the mail his face lit up! I preceded with caution as Jax is very sensitive to fabrics and how they feel on him. But he put it on and he ran around the house doing Ninja moves! It was amazing to see him SO happy! And of course he looked adorable!!! That year we went Trick or Treating with his two cousins Hudson and Luke. His cousins are older than him and Jax idolizes them! Together the 3 of them approached houses that were decorated in a spooky ways but Jax bravely entered a few feeling safe under the protection of his cousins.

Fast forward a year and our family has now moved to El Dorado Hills. We took ownership of the house on the 22nd of October giving us a week or so to decorate the house. Jax has some amazing decorating ideas! It was so much fun to watch him move things around until everything was just right. The whole family was feeling the Halloween spirit and we decided for the first time ever to do a Family Themed costume. Even our little black lab puppy got dressed up and came Trick or Treating! Jax picked for us a Pokemon theme. Greg was Ash a Pokemon trainer. I was Serena, also a Pokemon trainer. Jax was a Pokemon called Gengar and Makena was Pikachu!

On Halloween night we headed out as a family with some of our new neighbors. Everything was perfect!  I loved watching Jax run with enthusiasm from door to door with the children, running past us to show what he got after each house. His eyes were twinkling with excitement and the thrill of Halloween night! I am so happy to see Jax taken in by the Halloween spirit!  Soaking in the holidays through the eyes of a child is just the best!!! Here’s to hoping next year he wants to do a family costume again, it was so much fun!
