Freelensing Flower Collection

Welcome to my blog post about my personal art, my “Freelensing Flower Collection”.

Freelensing?  What in the world is that?!

Freelensing is a photography technique where the camera’s lens is intentionally detached from the camera body, while the camera is still on. This allows the artist to manipulate the lens’s angle & depth of field to create unique & often painterly effects.

And it was this method of photographing flowers that helped me in more ways than I can imagine. I started photographing flowers when the Covid pandemic hit. The thing is, I don’t do photography for a living because its a way to make money, I do photography for a living because when I have my camera in my hand the whole world melts away.  Its when Im most present, in my flow and fully in my happy place!

When the world shut down and I was not able to photograph wedding, babies, families and headshots- I missed taking pictures. I missed the feeling I get when Im creating an image.

At the time of 2020 our son was 9 years old, certainly a cute age but he was NOT interested in being my subject matter. My husband Greg Gill who owns Gill Gardens was so busy during the pandemic as everyone suddenly wanted to spruce up their yard since they were spending so much time at home.

So I turned to flowers…lovely subject matter! They don’t talk back and are always willing to cooperate 🙂

But why Freelensing? Why make taking pictures of flower more difficult? Yes it’s true that freelensing can be challenging but the process of trying to achieve the result that I’m looking for takes all my mind power and physical stillness. It’s a meditative practice for me. And the challenge combined with the unique result is worth it to me!

Come see the images in person!

I am THRILLED to be showing my Freelensing Flower Collection in the form of matted prints and note cards starting Sunday May 4th at the El Dorado Hills Town Center Farmers Market!  The market this year is in the amphitheatre and the Rose Garden- across from Milestone Restaurant and Brickyard.

My husband will be sharing the booth with me selling his unique hanging Driftwood vases, allowing customers to bring some of nature indoors!

There are 2 Black Eyed Susan in this image. There is sunlight coming from the top of the image. The flowers are photographed using a free-posing photography technique.

I look forward to meeting you and showing you my full Freelensing Flower Collection!

Hugs & High 5’s,

Susannah
